Measure Up!

Maths and measure through architectural scale drawings, construction and models

Have you ever wondered why measure is important?

Or when you would ever use the skills in real life?

Come along to discover why it's an important part of everyday life and how we use measurement skills to quantify the world around us.

In this programme, we will use numeracy and science skills to design and construct various models.  We will use different units of measurement to build working and stimulated models. While building a range of these students will compare, estimate and calculate various aspects of measurement.  Each week they will further develop their skills and independence while making models of a rocket, a zoo and a theme park. Children will advance their scientific enquiry skills as well as their numeracy and creative thinking skills through this programme.

Learning outcomes

  • To compare and estimate lengths of groups of objects.

  • To be able to measure and convert metres, centimetres and millimetres.

  • Make estimates of capacity, length and area.

  • Calculate length, area and perimeter of objects.

  • Multiply a whole number by a decimal.

  • Calculate speed from measured distance and time.

  • Solve multiplication problems using halving and doubling strategies.

  • Further develop team work and creative thinking skills to solve design problems.

  • Developing design and technology skills through construction and model building.
